'The Keys' formerly "The New Cross Keys", is situated opposite the Black Bull and is the only pub on this side of the high street.
Until recently 'The Keys' was owned by the Lancaster family who ran it for many years. They recently sold out and the place was closed down for major refurbishment. Rumours abounded that 'The Keys' was to be transformed into a trendy wine bar and that the famous disco and flashing dance floor had to go, leading to Yarmpubs.co.uk launching a 'save the flashing dance floor campaign' over 800 people voting to keep it ! On Friday 5th September 2003 'The Keys' re-opened and I went in knowing that I was going to hate it. How wrong I was! The new owner has obviously put a lot of thought and money into the refurbishment and I can say that without doubt it is now the best pub in Yarm. The decor downstairs is chic, modern and stylish with LCD televisions built in everywhere. It is much extended now with 2 large bars downstairs and now even an outside seating area at the rear.
There is now an extensive menu, more restaurant than traditional bar meal style. Now to the upstairs, has it retained the charm and disco cheese that's packed people in from far and wide? You bet and then some! The new Plasma flashing dance floor is something else. (I'd like to think that it's down to my campaign, but then again they might have been going to do it anyway) What can I say Yarm's Premiere Night spot (Yarm's only night spot) The legendary "Claggy mat" Lives, A must visit location for any visitor to Yarm with its unique Saturday night fever style flashing dance floor. The upstairs is also completely re-modelled with 2 large bars. The toilets have now been moved up to the third floor. There is a cover charge on the door and the place is open till 1.30am.
